face mask article:
http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/masks.htm
Information on the effectiveness of facemasks1 and respirators2 for the control of influenza in community settings is extremely limited. Thus, it is difficult to assess their potential effectiveness in controlling swine influenza A (H1N1) virus transmission in these settings. In the absence of clear scientific data, the interim recommendations below have been developed on the basis of public health judgment and the historical use of facemasks and respirators in other settings.

http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/recommendations.htm

Infectious period

The infectious period for a confirmed case of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection is defined as 1 day prior to the cases illness onset to 7 days after onset.

A suspected case of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection is defined as:

1) A person with acute respiratory illness who was a close contact to a confirmed case of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection during the cases infectious period, OR

2) A person with an acute respiratory illness who traveled to or resides in an area where there are confirmed cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection.

Close contact is defined as: within about 6 feet of an ill person who is a confirmed or suspected case of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection during the cases infectious period.

Acute respiratory illness is defined as: recent onset of at least two of the following: rhinorrhea or nasal congestion, sore throat, cough (with or without fever or feverishness)

High-risk group for complications of influenza is defined as: a person who is at high-risk for complications of seasonal influenza: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr57e717a1.htm. However, it too early to ascertain what persons are at high-risk for complications of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection. This guidance will be updated as new information is available.

Clinicians should consider swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection in the differential diagnosis of patients with febrile respiratory disease and who 1) live in areas in the U.S. with confirmed human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection or 2) who traveled recently to Mexico or were in contact with persons who had febrile respiratory illness and were in the areas of the U.S. with confirmed swine influenza cases or Mexico in the 7 days preceding their illness onset.

Special Considerations for Children

Aspirin or aspirin-containing products (e.g. bismuth subsalicylate Pepto Bismol) should not be administered to any confirmed or suspected ill case of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection aged 18 years old and younger due to the risk of Reye syndrome. For relief of fever, other anti-pyretic medications are recommended such as acetaminophen or non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Antiviral Resistance

This swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is sensitive (susceptible) to the neuraminidase inhibitor antiviral medications zanamivir and oseltamivir. It is resistant to the adamantane antiviral medications amantadine and rimantadine.

Seasonal influenza A and B viruses continue to circulate at low levels in the U.S. and in Mexico. Currently circulating human influenza A (H1N1) viruses are resistant to oseltamivir and sensitive (susceptible) to zanamivir, amantadine and rimantadine. Currently circulating human influenza A (H3N2) viruses are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine, but sensitive (susceptible) to oseltamivir and zanamivir. Therefore, at this time antiviral treatment recommendations for suspected cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection need to consider potential infection with swine influenza A (H1N1) virus as well as human influenza viruses, and their different antiviral susceptibilities.

WHY IS PEOPLE PANICKING IT IS LIKE A NORMAL FLU !!!! IT JUST HAS A NEW NAME IN FRONT OF IT really just be clean and your are safe this is not even funny

I'm in favor of locking down ALL of our borders until this thing gets resolved. We don't NEED a complete epidemic. How much you guys wanna bet it was the ILLEGALS who brought it in? We have plenty of vacation spots in our own country. People don't need to be leaving unless they have specific work overseas. And they should be screened before they go, and after they come back. This needs to be resolved.
aggiematt86 (1 year ago)
I don't understand what that has to do with the lethality of the virus.
triumphelf (1 year ago)
If a Pandemic did Break out in the USA ,The Government!can't contian it -Illegal Cross the Border in Thousand's everyDay...but I'm Sure American's don't need to Panic..Mostly Fear mongering by the Media.

Error! The school group was not from Australia, it was from NEW ZEALAND. There are no cases in Australia, and as of Midnight: 2 hours, all visitors from the America's who enter Australia will be screened. They are already talking about blocking flights to Australia and from the Americas and possibly New Zealand. This country does take quarantine seriously and would have closed the border by now if it was that close. Blessings FLETCHER
aggiematt86 (1 year ago)
I do agree with you when you say we need to close off our borders, but seriously, I don't think swine flu is that big a deal. 8% of people in Mexico who have gotten it have died, and Mexico's a third world nation, so I don't think us Americans have anything to worry about. It's probably more contagious than the normal flu, but I don't think it's dangerous. This is exactly like the SARS/West Nile virus/bird flu scares.
sugarpuddin88 (1 year ago)
That's right - More government dependence If the bullies at the FDA allowed medications by ICN Pharmaceuticals, we would be able to easily treat anyone contracting the disease - And no dangerous vaccines would be required! Americans have the government they deserve!

abo t the same here i picked up some honey yesterday . and am smudging. other wise extra orange juice and vitamins and just being carefull.
myangels7 (1 year ago)
Thanks Mary....I work where there is someone coughing up a lung all the time...I can't take off work everytime someone else coughs. I do self treat myself and my children with homeopathic remedies, vitamins, minerals and prayer. Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) said the border should be closed until the threat is resolved.
12thAquarian (1 year ago)
Do you think its..the planets defense mechanism? There is a virus that only kills a kind of ants...a plant that explodes these microscopic organisms and stick to the ants...all of a sudden the ants start acting funny to where the other ants take him off and let it die, and they stay and die as well. So it wont infect the whole entire colony..possibility. I also didn't know that everyyear they have to come up with a new antidote for the flu it mutates every single year.
PaintMaryconley (1 year ago)
The man traveled to Mexico last week for a professional conference and became ill after he returned home. His wife became ill later. Their doctor suspected swine flu but it wasn't confirmed until flu specimens were flown to the federal Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.
PaintMaryconley (1 year ago)
TOPEKA, Kan. -- Kansas health officials say they've confirmed two cases of swine flu in a married couple living in central Kansas. The man and woman, who live in Dickinson County, were not hospitalized and the state is describing their illnesses as mild. Dr. Jason Eberhart-Phillips, the state health officer, said "Fortunately, the man and woman understand the gravity of the situation and are very willing to isolate themselves."
carguyinok (1 year ago)
Food for thought. I hope it's not the case and that it's being blown way bigger then it is. But, I did alittle homework because the news is not saying WHERE in Kansas the cases are. It's in Dickinson County Kansas. Dickinson county is about 100 miles away from the geographic center of the states. Make of it what you please. It's only the truth. Look for yourself and you will see. North south east west now near dead center. Keep up the good work!!! 5 stars
